editorial
Confronted with the inescapable
necessity of a drastic reduction in
CO2 emissions, we face the challenge
of producing CO2-neutral
energy based on renewable sources.
Power generated from such sources
– for example electricity from wind
and solar energy – fluctuates significantly
on a daily and seasonal basis
and must be converted into an
energy carrier that is easily stored
and distributed.
AVL is working hard on diverse and
innovative propulsion solutions that
can be powered by forms of energy
that satisfy these requirements:
The future, therefore, belongs to intensified
electrification – from mild
hybrids and full plug-in hybrids to
battery electric or fuel-cell electric
vehicles. The latter option, the efficient
fuel-cell technology, offers a
broad range of applications, and hydrogen
as energy carrier is a deciding
factor as to whether the transition
toward a fossil-free energy
system can succeed. But the thermoelectric
system will play an important
role too. In combination with
CO2-neutral fuels and cost-efficient
hybridization it has the potential to
become pollutant-free.
We at AVL see competition and
complementarity between varying
technologies in the fields of primary
energy, energy carriers and drive
systems in order to achieve the
goal of CO2 neutrality and effective
absence of pollutants. For endcustomers,
vehicles must remain affordable
and offer added value in
terms of consumption and driving
pleasure.
