Since 1992, the EU has introduced an increasingly stringent program
with Euro 1, and in 2014 Euro 6 became law. Euro 6 has been regularly
amended, and the current standard – Euro 6d – came into force in

January this year.
And now the question is, what comes next – and how does the industry
prepare for it?
Currently little is known about Post Euro 6 legislation, other than from
trend forecasts, and conversations with European Commission (EC) decision
makers. The EC panel is advised by the Consortium of Ultra Low
Emissions Vehicles (known as CLOVE) and an Advisory Group on Vehicle
Emissions Standards (AGVES). These groups consist of industry
experts and academics from across the EU, including experts from AVL.
“Nothing is fixed at the moment,” says Kurt Engeljehringer, Business
Development Manager Emission Testing at AVL. “But the targets are clear,
and they’re calling it Post Euro 6 because the idea is that it will be so good
that we won’t need anything better ever again.”
As ambitious as that sounds, and while still vague, the EC has stated
targets demanding that “all vehicles will be as clean as possible under all
EU driving conditions, with a focus on near-zero emissions in cities.” This
obviously favours electric vehicles, but much can be done with conventional
and hybrid powertrains to meet these demands. With our understanding
of technology, the industry, legislative trends and our close participation
with the EC, we have a strong idea of what the industry can expect.
“Pollutant emissions must be gauged by RDE testing and On-Board Monitoring
(OBM),” explains Engeljehringer. “Laboratory testing will focus
on GHG and pollutants which can’t be measured on the road.”
All of these are competences already covered in our solution portfolio. We
have products on the market that not only meet current standards, but are
ready for what we believe will come next.
Particulates, for example, must be measured at sizes down to 23 nm under
Euro 6d, but our latest range of particulate measurement devices can
operate at 10 nm. Based on our forecasts we believe this will be the Post
Euro 6 threshold.
