ADAS and autonomous driving
Our integrated development and test
platform, which features a combination
of tools, enables the efficient
application of process and method
guidelines. Our common worldwide
development process is based
on the requirements of automotive
process assessment methods like
Spice ISO/IEC 15504, CMMI or
standards like ISO 26262. It covers
the entire development process
from proof-of-concept to pilot
phase, series development, and even
the full product lifecycle.
Our solutions are tailored to your
needs and automated driving applications
and can be implemented
seamlessly into your existing workflow.
We even offer modular white
box solutions to enable you to deliver
technologically mature products
to market that are distinct to
your brand.
With software and hardware development
for different global demands
and market sectors, along
with controller sub-module development
that supports market differentiation,
we can help you create
your own products that are
robust and reliable, and find your
place in the evolving marketplace.
This is ideal for small series purposes
or special applications, and
is supported by feasibility testing,
advanced predictive energy management
and compliance with industry
standards. Alternatively, we
can conduct this work for you, ensuring
that our solutions strengthen
and differentiate your brand.
TOOLS AND METHODS
FOR DEVELOPMENT
AND TESTING
It is one level of complexity to test
ADAS systems against target specifications
– but another to validate an
AD technology stack. When humans
are removed from the loop, as we are
trying to do with AD systems, the
technology must be almost infallible.

AVL is developing connected ADAS/AD systems to support both
commercial applications (above) and passenger car applications
with our AVL DRIVINGCUBE™ test environment (opposite, bottom).
“AD systems need to perform better than a human driver because the public
won’t accept a mistake made by an autonomous vehicle,” says Thomas
Guntschnig, Portfolio and Partner Manager for ADAS/AD Testing Solutions.
ADAS and AD testing is complicated, often with billions of variations and
scenarios to be executed. And as AD systems become more complex, and
the demands made on them increase, testing systems need to keep up with
these challenges. Only through a combination of physical tests and simulations
can manufacturers validate their vehicles over large distances under
limitless conditions to ensure system robustness.
Our comprehensive, scenario-based ADAS/AD verification and validation
toolchain generates operational scenarios, relevant test cases, and executes
testing and homologation functions in combined virtual and real road environments.
Exhaustive testing that would take years now takes just a fraction
of the time. Combined with cloud computing we can reduce virtual
validation testing from weeks to days.
It also enables users to collect data during, for example, road testing, to
generate scenarios, analyze KPIs, create test reports and make sense of the
vast amounts of data generated.
This toolchain strategy is based on an open and integrated tool environment.
It allows the integration of different tools and content such as traffic
or environment simulation tools, as well as sensor models from different
suppliers. For example, you can use our vehicle-in the-loop test environment,
the AVL DRIVINGCUBE™, to test AD systems integrated into a
physical vehicle in a virtual and highly reproducible environment.
