NEW EMISSION CHASSIS DYNAMOMETER FOR
US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
AVL was awarded a contract by the US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) for equipping another chassis dynamometer test cell at the National
Vehicle and Fuel Laboratory (NVFEL) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The new test
For years AVL List and Magna
have been working to develop the
vehicles of the future. Now, specially
equipped passenger cars with autonomous

longitudinal and lateral
control came into active use driving
autonomously – thus steering, braking
and accelerating – over a certain
period of time on specific road sections.
For reasons of safety, the vehicle
functions were constantly monitored
by experienced test drivers. The
aim is to develop driver assistance
systems which avoid fatal errors and
reduce accident figures on the street
by utilizing innovative technology.
The first tests were a crucial step towards
fast and efficient solutions for
AVL customers as well as a safe mobility
for the future. <

cell, which is particularly designed to
measure the smallest concentrations
of vehicle emissions in accordance
with EPA 40 CFR Part 1066 testing
procedures, is a duplicate of one recently
inaugurated at the NVFEL.
Both will be used for the verification
and compliance of Greenhouse
Gas Regulations and Tier 3 Regulations
as well as general emission
compliance activities. Furthermore,
the updated test cells help the EPA
implement clean vehicle assessment
programs for gasoline, diesel, naturalgas
powered and hybrid vehicles. <
