CONSISTENT USE
OF SIMULATION SOLUTIONS
IN POWERTRAIN ELECTRIFICATION
2 0 F O C U S
The development process of a
new vehicle drive system is characterized
by a number of concept and
design decisions. Where conventional
vehicles are concerned, many
of these decisions are reached as the
result of a wealth of experience accumulated
over many years. In the case
of modern electrified drive systems,
however, such experience is limited,
and decisions must be exclusively
made based on calculation results.
So it is even more important to provide
continuous simulation support
throughout the development process
of an electrified drive system.

Powertrain component simulation within
a virtual environment is an important part
of the development process.
CONCEPT ANALYSIS
Vehicle drive system specifications
are derived from the target criteria a
hybrid or electric vehicle must satisfy,
such as efficiency, driving behavior
and range. Indirectly, this also results
in the degree of electrification, which
may range from a micro, mild, full and
plug-in hybrid to an all-electric vehicle
with or without range extender.
In concept design, the drive systems
to be taken into consideration are
