editorial
Advanced driver-assistance systems
improve road safety and offer a host
of advantages relating to comfort,
energy efficiency and emissions. Today,
well-established assistance systems,
such as lane keeping assistance,
electronic stabilization programs or
collision warning systems, have already
led to reduced accident figures.
Efforts to improve the sensors and
expand the range of automated driving
features are facilitating the next
step toward semi-automated driving.
One of AVL’s main focuses is on the
development and optimization of driver
assistance systems and their integration
into the complete vehicle.
AVL pays particular attention to the
involved people and, especially, to the
topic of perceived safety. Right now,
AVL is conducting test drives on its
own proving ground in order to test
and assess functions such as adaptive
cruise control, lane keeping assist and
overtaking and braking assist systems.
In a few years’ time, so-called
“highway pilots” will come into use,
which will enable autonomous driving
from highway entrance to exit.
This means that, for the first time
ever, fully autonomous driving will
be possible on certain routes.
As a reliable technology partner to
OEMs, AVL makes important contributions
to the further development
of driver assistance systems, aiming
at a dramatic reduction in the number
of accidents, and thereby raising
road safety significantly.
