fact which is also causing a sharp rise
in the amount of exhaust emissions
extracted. This may adversely affect
catalysts or the engine control system.
Particularly where small engines
are concerned, this often makes it
necessary to perform measurements
multiple times to ensure that the result
is as accurate as possible.
With its AVL AMA SL™, AVL has
developed a system that requires
merely 2.5 l/min, which is no more
than 25% of the usual sampling
amount of 10 l/min – with EGR
measurements this figure drops to
as little as 10 %. Flow rates this low
enable parallel measurements of exhaust
component concentrations
and particle measurements, preventing
the need for expensive and redundant
test runs. Featuring a large

and dynamic measuring range, the
AVL AMA SL™ analyzes up to eight
different exhaust gas components,
and optionally determines the exhaust
return rate (EGR). Thanks to
AVL ActiveLink™, it is easily integrated
into an AVL PUMA Open 2™
testbed network.
With the AVL AMA SL™, AVL has
been able to make some crucial optimizations.
The cost of ownership is
much lower than for other measuring
systems, because the AMA SL™ requires
40 % less power, and, due to
its robust, maintenance-friendly system
concept, servicing activities are
lowered by 50 %, resulting in a drastic
reduction of maintenance-related
downtimes. The system’s high level
of standardization has also made it
possible to shorten the delivery time
to just about 10 weeks.
Independent of fuel type, the AVL
AMA SL™ is perfectly suited for the
development and certification of internal
combustion engines in accordance
with all emissions legislations
globally in force which require undiluted
exhaust emission measurement.
The system has already been
put to use successfully in first customer
projects and test environments.
“The response from customers
has been extremely positive,” says
Ulf Behnke. “We’ve received very favorable
feedback – and not just on the
considerably improved efficiency for
the same performance, but also concerning
the easy accessibility and the
universal power supply. Smart, highly
effective measuring systems like the
AVL AMA SL™ will have a major
role to play in the future.” <
