Transmission Testing Solutions

Optimized transmission testing for speed, torque, and lifecycle performance.

Our transmission test system enables efficient and accurate validation of conventional and electrified drivetrains. It supports a wide range of applications from early development to final verification, ensuring performance, durability, and efficiency.

As the complexity of modern propulsion systems increases, the demands on testing and instrumentation grow accordingly. With the simultaneous development of critical components such as internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid engines, e-drives, and transmissions, it becomes imperative to conduct transmission testing at the earliest stages of development.

Our transmission test systems are designed to support in validating transmissions throughout the entire development process. Leveraging decades of expertise, we offer robust testing solutions for various vehicle types, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and off-road applications, covering all essential areas such as durability, functionality, performance, and NVH.

OEMs and suppliers are now developing components for innovative propulsion systems. Unlike the previous focus on ICE, the shift to fully electrified drivetrains introduces new challenges.

Our drive units must adapt to these changes by supporting e-drives, which require smaller, high-power-density solutions capable of higher speeds and greater flexibility. The design of e-motors also introduces a wider range of variants compared to ICEs, demanding more versatility from our testing systems.

Performance Testing – Light Duty

An AVL DynoPrime drive unit replaces the internal combustion or hybrid powertrain in light duty applications. Its slim design and short length allow direct mounting to the transmission input shaft, even in transverse configurations. A engine model simulates the static and dynamic behavior of an ICE, including combustion-induced speed irregularities. This setup enables early-phase testing with high realism.

Performance Testing –  Heavy Duty

In heavy-duty applications, our drive units meet demanding speed and torque targets without space limitations. Two, four, or more load machines with torque capacities up to 40,000 Nm are deployed. To reach higher torques, matched gearboxes may be used. These AVL systems allow for comprehensive testing of transmissions and heavy-duty axles, making them ideal for trucks, buses, and off-road vehicles.

E-Transmission Testing – Light Duty

The e-transmission test solution meets the required speed and torque of the replaced e-motor while fitting into compact spaces. It supports the variability of e-axles in both co-axial and offset configurations. An AVL DynoPrime with up to 20,000 rpm enables direct mounting in a transverse layout. Using a gearbox increases flexibility and supports co-axial setups. This ensures reliable e-axle testing without needing the original drive unit.

NVH Testing

For NVH testing, AVL drive units are acoustically optimized to meet low-noise requirements. The NVH chamber is directly coupled to the transmission, while load units are placed outside to maintain minimal ambient noise. This testbed enables precise noise and vibration analysis under realistic conditions – an essential factor for vehicle integration and overall customer experience.

Our transmission test systems are engineered to validate a wide range of transmissions, addressing varying types, speeds, and power classes. The main challenge lies in integrating an ICE or e-motor within a compact, close axle arrangement. The AVL drive unit is designed to meet the necessary speed and torque requirements while ensuring compatibility with the available installation space. Our solutions are capable of handling the variability of e-axles in both co-axial and offset configurations, along with the intelligent mechanical connection of e-motors to transmissions.

The optimization of the design and validation process is a key benefit, as our systems allow for early-phase transmission testing, even without a fully developed propulsion unit. This reduces the likelihood of design changes in later development stages. In addition, AVL PUMA 2™ automation software adds significant value to the testing process by synchronizing data from all connected devices. This results in precise measurement and control, enabling faster transmission system development through various test types, such as transient, time-lapse, and road load simulation tests.
