Data Acquisition - AVL FEM 4™

Performance unveiled

The next generation of AVL’s data acquisition hardware for combustion, hybrid, electric and fuel cell powertrains

Video file

The increasing diversification of powertrain technologies requires an adaptive measurement solution that can be tailored to the individual application in a very short time. Such solutions need to be adapted and configured to their individual environments as quickly as possible in order to contribute to a continuous increase in testing efficiency. New powertrain technologies require a higher data throughput rate in real time. The AVL FEM 4™ enables you to measure all raw data relevant for the characterization of the unit-under-test, for example state of charge and state of health when testing batteries.

Addressing the Challenges Faced by OEMs - New trends resulting from the diversification currently occurring in powertrains place demands on measurement systems that conventional devices simply cannot fulfil. The future technologies used in data logging devices must provide extended measurement ranges combined with precise data logging capability and high throughput rates over a very wide spectrum of temperatures. AVL FEM 4 represents the next generation of IO measurement systems.

FEM 4

Direct measurement of voltages

Highest measurement accuracy

Wide operating temperature range

Adaptive modular design

High sampling and data throughput rates in real-time

The AVL Approach

By using modern signal conditioning and the real-time EtherCAT interface, the FEM 4 meets the demands of modern development processes. The new circuit concept enables you to control and measure signals such as currents, temperatures, frequencies and voltages directly up to 2,400 VDC without influencing the measurement signal. The measuring modules in a FEM 4 can be quickly adapted to new tasks, helping you to increase flexibility and ultimately optimize the utilization of your test facilities.

Technical Data Unit

Module size (W x H x D)

45 x 132 x 150 mm
Power supply 9 … 35 VDC
Interfaces EtherCAT, CAN
Operating temperature -40 … +80 °C
Relative humidity 20 … 80 %, non-condensing

FEM 4

The following benefits are essential in order to measure all data relevant for the characterization of a unit-under-test and support the continuous increase of testing efficiency:

Adaptive Modular Design

Easy and rapid connection to all kinds of powertrain technologies thanks to a cascading mechanism and frontend design.

Distributed, Resilient System

The wide temperature resilience and the distributed design of the modules enable installation in close proximity to the unit-under-test.

Highest Measurement Accuracy

Calibrated according to ISO 17025 – fewer iterations, reduced costs and increased efficiency.

Galvanic Isolation

High galvanic isolation up to 1,500 VDC for electrified modules support a direct measurement of DC voltages up to 2,400 VDC without influencing the measurement.

Advanced Data Communication

High sampling and data communication in real-time, e.g. EtherCAT.

High Voltage Isolation

These modules offer a high degree of insulation of the individual connector (single channel or group of channels) for use at high voltage potentials, e.g. in electrification.

Voltage Measurement Modules

The voltage modules enable measurements at low and high voltage (HV) levels with up to 8 selectable measurement ranges depending on the module type.

Current Measurement Modules

The current measurement modules enable measurements up to ±24 mA, or up to 2,000 A with an additional ballast.

Temperature Modules

The following modules are suitable for temperature measurements. Depending on the type, the channels are individually isolated or combined into groups.

Universal Modules

In order to cover the widest possible range of applications, the following universal modules are available.

Active Modules

In addition to passive measuring modules, the FEM 4 product family also offers active control modules for signal generation.

Basis and Extension Modules

Further basic and extension modules are offered to complete the portfolio.
