Developing Efficient, Robust and Reliable Scrubbers to Meet IMO Sulphur Cap 2020

GL-AST_Image-Web-Webinar-Scrubber_05-20

Increased public awareness about the air pollution caused by ships requires a change in the marine propulsion technology. Since January 1 2020, the new IMO Sulphur Cap regulation is in place. Vessels running on heavy fuel oil (HFO) need to clean exhaust gas from sulphur or use alternative fuels like very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) or marine gasoil (MGO).To find the holistic optimum for an individual ship, many factors need to be considered:

• Total cost of ownership (OPEX and CAPEX) - Installation, consumables, needed energy, handling effort, maintenance cost, impact on engine, controls concept, …• Usage profile and application - ECA areas, deep sea vessels, local requirements, combination with SCR, operation profile, …

• Being ready for the future - Legislations, port authorities, availability of fuel, …

• Green image - Reduction of emissions SOx, PM, NOx, PN, CO2, …For many applications, the installation and operation of a scrubber is the most economical solution even if it requires additional energy and consumables. Scrubbers need to be operated 24/7 and therefore efficiency and robustness are key requirements. With its simulation-driven scrubber solutions, AVL supports the design of new, but also the improvement of existing scrubbers and delivers solutions for reducing time required for trouble shooting.
