The market for battery- and hydrogen-powered trains is growing steadily, as many miles of track are not electrified. In addition, from a technology perspective, there is still much to be gained in terms of powertrain efficiency. While conventional rolling stock is either powered by electricity through overhead wires (catenary) or propelled by diesel engines, new but proven technologies are making their way onto the tracks. To support this market and technology growth, AVL has the right tools and solutions to best support development in these areas.

One of the biggest challenges in today's rolling stock market is to enable catenary-free operation without relying on internal combustion engine technology. While conventional trainsets and locomotives are powered by either overhead power lines or diesel fuel, battery and fuel cell powered trains are gaining traction in the rail market. To support the development and validation of these technologies, know-how transfer from the automotive industry is needed. This is where AVL comes in and enables this through our solutions.

Inverter Testing Solutions

The inverter acts as the brain of the electrified powertrain and is quite complex to understand in terms of handling and behavior. Together with the battery and the traction drive, it forms the basis of the powertrain. In order to improve development time-to-market, efficiency, noise, and overall driving comfort, the inverter must be tested on a dedicated test system. Such an optimized test environment results in an efficient verification process and reduced time compared to testing the unit under test in a real-world prototype.

Clean Energy: AVL Italia Wins the Campania Region Tender for a Green Hydrogen Production Plant for Public Road and Rail Transport

AVL Italia has won the tender issued by Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV), a company of the Campania Region operating in the public road and rail transport sector, for the construction of a 5MW (megawatt) green hydrogen production plant, with on-site storage and a 350 bar refueling station, for local public transport trains and buses.
