Seth Wheaton came to AVL with a past focused in electrification. Seth joined the AVL team in 2019 as a Service Engineer. After gaining experience in AVL tools, Seth moved to a Technical Sales Specialist role to utilize his experience in electrification, coupled with his developing AVL experience to help grow the AVL expertise in that area. Seth eventually saw his career moving towards a people management role and took the opportunity to continue growth within AVL as a Customer Service Operations Manager.
Empowerment
Seth finds fulfillment and satisfaction in empowering his team. He pushes collaboration within the team to try and solve problems and find solutions utilizing available personnel and resources, and ultimately contacting him directly if additional support and guidance are required. His major role as a leader isn’t to manage day-to-day business/tasks, it’s to remove roadblocks for his teams to help them find the solutions required. Seth values growth within the team through intrateam collaboration and support. If one team or area is seeing success while another team is struggling, Seth encourages the teams to work together to try and help each other.
Communication
AVL Test Systems, Inc. leadership encourages 2-way communication. Encouraging feedback from employees to drive continuous improvement within products/services and an organization as a whole. In addition, providing teams with communication methods and resources is key. He states, “access to information is the key to a successful organization.”
In Seth’s team they have compiled job specific information into Microsoft teams groups to help employees easily reference information as required which has expedited onsite trouble shooting at customer locations. In addition, the MS teams groups provide a group of knowledgeable AVL employees who can all receive and send communications. This provides a wide net of support when a problem arises, and a solution is not clear.
Basics
Our management team values regular employee check-ins where employees can share concerns, triumphs, etc. on a regular basis. Open door. As a leader at AVL, Seth states “I would rather hear 15 good ideas than one great idea,” encouraging employees to come to him with all topics.
