Already during her "Software Engineering and Management" studies at TU Graz, Linda Kolb was fascinated by data and the insights that can be drawn from it: As part of her master's thesis, she developed an AI model that recognizes everyday activities such as brushing teeth or having breakfast for residents of a smart home. "That's why I looked for a company that deals with processing large amounts of data - and have been working at AVL since August 2023," says the data expert.

Problem Solvers

The software developer works on the AVL Data Analytics Platform, which monitors vehicle fleets, including the battery status of public transport buses. "I write," explains Linda, "software that reads, processes, and creates data analysis diagrams for the buses. Engineers can then read which battery components need to be replaced." For the developer, it is enriching to work in an international environment - with colleagues from Croatia, France, Brazil, and South Korea - where support is always available when technical help is needed. AVL stands out for Linda as "experts from different fields work here, allowing you to broaden your own horizons. Thanks to the many departments, there is also the opportunity to switch within the company if you want to try something else."

Team Spirit

AVL offers technically inclined academics various opportunities, according to the expert - from machine learning to IT security. Continuing education and training also play a significant role, for example, as part of a collaboration with Microsoft. "Representatives from Microsoft give exciting lectures here. In computer science, it is essential to continue learning, as there are constantly new developments, such as in machine learning," says Linda. Her career highlight so far? Setting up an automated pipeline with colleagues that transports software updates to customers' cloud environments with just one click - "and simplifies so much that was previously more complex." What she appreciates about AVL is the great team spirit fostered by events such as ski weekends or cycling races. "We are," she says, "given a lot of initiative, as AVL looks for people who solve problems with their knowledge and innovative technologies. Our team is developing a new product that is not yet on the market - which is special to me because we are pioneers in our field."
