AVL SIMpulse - Pioneering the Next Generation of Electric Drive Units

The fourth part of this online event series focuses on AVL's simulation solution for electric drive development.

The electrification of vehicle powertrains is one of the most important contributions to a sustainable society. To advance this progress, innovative solutions for the electric drive (e-drive) are needed. One approach is the adoption of virtual development methods to quickly validate concepts, optimize promising approaches, and bring them to market promptly.

OEMs strive to make the e-drive as small and light as possible, since the battery inside the electric vehicle is already voluminous and heavy. However, to compensate for a smaller size, the e-drive has to run faster to provide the same level of power. Operating small sized e-drives at high speeds and loads will, although, inevitably lead to high thermal loads. Therefore, developing the next generation of EDUs is much more challenging compared to as it was up to now. Only an integrated development approach accounting for this complexity and focusing on product quality as much as development speed will get us there.

Looking at the current practice at many OEMs and TIERs, we see that the individual simulation tasks supporting the development of e-drives are often performed using different, independent software tools, thereby neglecting coupled phenomena.

By contrast, AVL offers a non-segregated simulation solution to address the key challenges in electric drive development. In particular, electromagnetics (magnetic flux, losses, forces, moments), fluid mechanics (cooling), acoustics and durability are addressed holistically. Our e-drive experts will share their best practices and you can debate with them in a live roundtable session.

Don't miss out on the opportunities that virtualizing your e-drive development can provide. Especially when it comes to using a consistent set of simulation tools for a streamlined workflow.
