AVL List GmbH, the world’s largest independent company for the development, simulation and test engineering of drive systems for international OEMs, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) intend to form a strategic alliance. The aim of the initiative is to pool existing activities and carry out joint research in the area of drive and mobility technologies, as well as related development technologies.

“The main purpose of the strategic collaboration between AVL and the KIT is the joint implementation of research projects, and the development of innovations and technologies, which will help OEMs meet future challenges,” announced AVL CEO Prof. Helmut List.

AVL has established a new branch in Karlsruhe, which will allow the execution of largerscale projects in close cooperation with the KIT in the context of the alliance. This will make it easier to harness synergies between research and the industrial implementation, and facilitate swift technology and method transfer to processes in the automotive industry. Communication, experience exchange and work supervision are to be organized as effectively as possible.

“The KIT stands for excellent research, outstanding teaching, as well as innovations for the benefit of industry and society. Together with our partner AVL, our aim is to systematically build a bridge between scientific findings and their application in the field of mobility systems,” said Professor Thomas Hirth, Vice President for Innovation and International Affairs at the KIT.

Close-knit collaboration between engineers

At the center of the cooperation are topical subject areas, such as consistent development, validation, optimization and model-based testing methods for powertrain technologies in the context of the complete vehicle. An additional focus is on the further development of advanced driver assistance systems and systems for automated driving. The future-oriented topics are to be addressed within a tight network of KIT and AVL engineers, organized in special innovation teams.

Also known as “the Research University in the Helmholtz Association,” the KIT creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. Its aim is to make significant contributions to the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility and information. With this in mind, roughly 9,300 employees work together across a broad range of disciplines encompassing natural sciences, engineering, economics, social sciences and the humanities.
