AVL is first-ever winner of national award for technology

Modular fuel cell system convinces expert jury

Staatspreis Technologie
  • Top Award from Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) goes to AVL
  • AVL’s modular hydrogen fuel cell system wins in the mobility technology category

AVL List GmbH is one of the first three winners of the new for 2024 national award for technology (“Staatspreis Technologie”). The mobility technology company from Graz won the BMK’s top award in the category for mobility technologies. The prize was awarded to a modular hydrogen fuel cell system developed by AVL for the use in freight transport. The official award was presented by Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler.

Graz, Austria, June 2024: AVL has been a global pioneer of climate-friendly mobility for many years. The most recent proof is the company being presented with the national award for technology (“Staatspreis Technologie”). The prize awarded for the first time this year is the top award that the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) bestows for pioneering solutions in the field of green and digital transformation.

AVL won first place in the mobility technologies category with a hydrogen-based fuel cell system project. The modular platform solution is scalable and is characterized by unprecedented energy density and performance. It was developed to decarbonize particularly CO2-intensive sectors such as freight transport by road, rail, water and air.

To this end, AVL has been developing various hydrogen technologies along the entire value chain for many years. These include fuel cells, which generate electricity from hydrogen for mobility applications, as well as electrolysis systems that can be used to produce hydrogen from climate-neutral sources (such as wind and solar energy).

The national award for technology honored solutions in a total of three categories (mobility technologies, AI for Green, and culture of innovation). An independent high-profile jury of experts selected the winners. Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler handed over the national award trophies in a ceremony held at the Schönbrunn Orangery.

Prof. Helmut List, CEO, AVL: “I would like to thank Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler and the jury for presenting us with the national award. And of course, our dedicated engineers who worked on this project. The national award for technology is a fantastic acknowledgement of our continuous development work in the field of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. With regard to energy storage in particular, hydrogen will become increasingly important wherever large vehicles and long distances are involved, meaning for aviation, marine and trucks.
