ALL-IN Zero

On September 23-24, 2024, the ALL-IN Zero project team convened at AVL Ibérica’s facilities in Mataró, Barcelona. This meeting marked a significant milestone as the project reached the halfway point of its four-year timeline.

The primary focus of the meeting was to evaluate the project’s progress and strategize the next steps in reducing emissions and fossil fuel dependency in heavy-duty road and power generation applications. The gathering brought together the team members to discuss the technological breakthroughs and experimental results.

The meeting highlighted the promising results of the Compact Membrane Reactor (CMR) system, which enables onboard hydrogen production from various low- or zero-carbon fuels. This innovative approach offers a viable path to reduce emissions in sectors traditionally relying on fossil fuels drastically.

AVL is playing a pivotal role in the project’s success, leveraging its expertise in engine and fuel cell development, emissions reduction, and system integration. The coordination by the Clean Mobility & Thermofluids Research Institute at the Universitat Politècnica de València (CMT-UPV) with the collaboration of the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ, UPV-CSIC) and the Forschungszentrum Jülich has been instrumental in advancing the technology.

As the project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe framework moves into its next phase, the focus will shift to real-world applications developing a digital twin of the multi-fuel system. The Barcelona meeting underscored the importance of international collaboration in tackling global challenges like climate change. It also showcased how the ALL-IN Zero project is paving the way for a greener and more efficient future in heavy-duty transport.
