Workshop on Meshless CFD Simulation of Gearboxes and Racing Cars

Within the worldwide AVL University-Partnership-Program (UPP) we provide software licenses for simulation tools to our Formula Student Partners. 

Our focus in this workshop will be the tool PreonLab, which is a state-of-the-art SPH based solution (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) for modeling and simulating fluids in gearboxes and the whole vehicle.

The simulation of gearboxes is one of the most challenging tasks in conventional CFD since the complex geometries and the highly dynamic oil distribution demands high efforts in preprocessing and computational power. There is no need to create a mesh in PreonLab, so the gearbox simulation model can be set up with minimal effort. Furthermore, the calculation time is in the range of a few hours to days and can be further reduced with the use of GPUs. This guarantees short turnaround times which is required in the limited development period of a Formula Student Car.

With the help of simulation, you can validate and optimize the lubrication concept to minimize the power loss and therefore increase the efficiency of the overall car. This can also be done by considering various driving maneuvers from preceding vehicle dynamics simulation.

Besides simulation of oil flows PreonLab offers the possibility of raining simulations of complete vehicles or components to ensure for example water tightness in the rain test.
